The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera Administrative Region (DENR-CAR) kicked off the celebration of the Philippine Environment Month with the Kapihan para sa Kalikasan held on May 25, 2022, at the DENR-CAR’s Conference Hall. The press conference facilitated by the Philippine Information Agency-Cordillera Administrative Region (PIA-CAR) and attended by the officials of the regional environment department led by its regional executive director Engr. Ralph C. Pablo, highlighted the regional accomplishments of the department for the first semester.
RED Pablo presented the regional department’s accomplishments for the past semester and highlighted the activities for the environment month with the theme “Protect Nature, Sustain our Future #WeHealNature4OurFuture”. Activities lined up for the month include the observance of the World Environment Day on June 5; a nationwide simultaneous tree planting on June 8; the 35th Anniversary of the DENR on June 10; Arbor Day celebration on the 24th, and other activities focusing on the DENR workforce.
Environmental Management Bureau (EMB-CAR) director Ma. Victoria Abrera presented on the regional status of clean air, water, and solid waste management programs.
Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB-CAR) director Fay W. Apil emphasized the accomplishments of the programs on Geohazards, Groundwater Assessment, and Responsible Mining. She also clarified the concerns presented regarding sinkholes in Baguio City. She explained that a total of 129 sinkholes were identified for the city and some of these may have been already built over, thus stressing the importance of an ocular geological inspection and hazard susceptibility certification as a requirement for building permits and land titling.
On the research side, Watershed and Water Resources Research and Development Extension Center head, Helen A. Maddumba presented the results of their study on the Carrying Capacity of Baguio City.
Other officials who presented for the environment department panel were Atty. Cleo D. Sabado-Andrada, Assistant Regional Director for Management Services; For. Maximo F. Soriano, Jr., Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services; Edgardo S. Flor, Penro Benguet, and Leandro L. de Jesus, CENRO-Baguio.
PIA-CAR director Helen Tibaldo and RPAO chief Elizabeth Antolin hosted the forum.
